Ok, yes, Valentine's Day is perhaps questionable as a holiday on certain levels. But what I do totally get behind is the whole spreading love around thing. That's a good thing. I think we could always stand to do a bit more love-spreading // receive a bit more lovins. You know, because it's nice. And in honor of that spirit, I really enjoy designing love-related products, so I did a whole bunch of it.

Here are the new love notes I designed for this year... to be sent whenever you like, to whomever you like -- for February 14th or for any other random day you choose! To your lover or your mom or your friend or your favorite barista or the quiet person at the bus stop or a very cute animal you saw at the park. Bazaar Bizarre San Francisco 2011 Holiday Limited Run Art Print

I was really honored to be invited to create a 3-color, limited run print for the indie art show, Bazaar Bizarre, that took place in San Francisco over the holidays. The show has a circus theme, and the image was made into 5x7 screenprints, as well as tote bags.

Inkygoodness :: Shape/Shift Exhibition opens today in Antwerp

I'm excited to be a part of this print exhibition in Antwerp, Belgium, which opens today and runs until the 28th of January as part of the Fiend Projects Festival at the Designcenter de Winkelhaak. The show is curated by Inkygoodness, and is an homage to the legendary creature the Shapeshifter. 25 artists from around the world are involved in the show -- be sure to check out the exhibition if you can, or go to the Inkygoodness website to see some more photos and purchase prints!

Encyclopedia Show :: Mesopotamia

My buddy Robb recently asked me to illustrate the program for their January installment of the Encyclopedia Show here in Chicago at the Vittum Theatre. The theme of the show was "Mesopotamia", and the topic I was to draw on was "Cuneiform".

I had fun working on this & also learned a lot about Mesopotamia in the process and felt much smarter.

Also got to check out the show last week and it was awesome. You should go see one if you live in Chicago -- they perform the first Wednesday of each month.

It has been frighteningly beautiful in Chicago. It's mid-January. I've been enjoying daily lake walks, jacketless. A bit terrifying, but I'm embracing it. Hope you all have a lovely day, too. x

Scrivener Creative Review

I just got my copy of the Scrivener Creative Review in the mail, a nice little quarterly creative publication from Montreal. It was published last summer & I had an illustration printed in this issue.

Things have been oh-so-busy!! I seem to have fallen far far behind on my posting about projects & such, but I'm trying to catch up. I have done a mural, some new paintings, working on a website, am participating in some shows, have new prints in the shop, and also a slew of new love-themed cards now available for your valentine's day needs! phew! I'm also hoping to sneak a little international jaunt in at some point during these winter months.... we shall see....I'll post photos & more info on all of these over the next couple of weeks -- I'm going to get back on the blog horse now. Swear.

Paintings at The Grind Cafe! Sloths!

I have a bunch of paintings hanging at The Grind Cafe in Chicago right now, 4613 N Lincoln Ave (just south of the square in Lincoln Square). Perhaps you need a last-minute gift for a loved one. If so, you could go and get a painting and also consume a nicely prepared caffeinated beverage and a tasty food item (they have all of these things). I find it to be a very pleasant little cafe. The paintings are just an extra reason to visit, but you should go anyway so that you can support local businesses and feel good inside. And drink coffee, which has antioxidants, and antioxidants are good for you.

2012 12-Month Calendar // Amazing Adventures Ahead

I am so very excited to announce the release of my limited edition 2012 wall calendar!! I designed 12 brand new images for this year's calendar, and it's now available for sale online in my etsy and supermarket shops!

The calendar is printed on heavyweight recycled stock with archival inks, and it has a white coated metal binding with a nail hook for easy hanging.
It measures 5.5" x 8.5" and has a unique image featured on each month's page, lunar phases, and a small space to write in important dates to remember.

I hope you like it as much as I liked creating it!

Once the edition sells out, it will be gone forever, so grab one while they're here!

Brilliant Corners of Popular Amusements is this weekend, Friday the 16th - Sunday the 18th in Eckhart Park, Chicago, 1330 W Noble Avenue!

Here's some well-worded information about the festival from their website:

The ability to let oneself go and be enthralled by a Brilliant moment of entertainment and spectacle is at the heart of human experience. At every corner of the globe people come together to enjoy both the most Popular and also obscure ways of human amusement. Some might say that Brilliant Corners of Popular Amusements hopes to reinvent the traditions of Vaudeville for a 21st century audience – a live mash up of art forms and entertainment under one umbrella. Our ultimate goal is to create a distinct environment that allows a wide audience to be entertained with the most creative ideas and performers regardless of genre. As a production the event has no stylistic boundaries, it can incorporate circus artists, music, comedians, short film and hopefully more. Additionally it is not wedded to a festival, time or place. We may pop up in your neighborhood park, at a nearby theater for one night, or just parading down your block.

Our inaugural event will run three days and transform Chicago’s Eckhart Park into a playground for adults and children alike September 16-18, 2011.

Access to the event grounds will be free and open to the public, where patrons can enjoy an outdoor music stage, sideshows, the renown Renegade Craft fair and a hand selected farmers market. For featured ticketed shows two large big top circus tents will feature performances from a variety of music, circus performers and audio visual experimentation. Performers to include:

Shellac, El Circo Cheapo, Bill Callahan, School of Seven Bells, A Hawk and A Hacksaw, The Amazing George Orange, Bomba Estereo, Dan Deacon, Sidi Toure, Charles Bradley, Richochet Project, A Taste of Zoppe, Fool’s Gold and more.

I'll be vending my wares as part of the Renegade Craft Fair pop-up in the middle of the festival grounds. Please stop over & say hello! Self-Employment Anniversary! And Accompanying Sale in my Shop!!!

Today is my one year anniversary of being fully self-employed with my art & illustration work. Holy shit! I am seriously in awe that I made it! I got a big kick from the universe last summer to make this leap, and I thought I'd give it a shot, since the timing seemed to be presenting itself to me (in a less than gentle kind of way, you know?). I spent this year throwing myself into my work, and learning how to run a small business along the way. I've never worked so hard in my life, and also have never felt so rewarded. And I've found it to be a wholly different experience than I've ever had before, because this work comes from my heart, and is directly connected to me.

I am feeling many things, but here are is a small selection::

1. Insanely grateful to all of the friends and strangers who have supported me.

2. Bewildered.

3. Excited for the year ahead to incorporate the things I've learned through jumping in to the fire and making mistakes.

4. Tired.

5. Beyond thrilled & big-hearted about the lovely and generous people I've met this year, both at home and through traveling around all over the country.

6. Insanely grateful to all of the friends and strangers who have supported me.

I will have 9 new paintings in the tenth annual Enormous Tiny Art Show at Nahcotta in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The show opens on September 1 & runs until October 2. There's an opening reception on September 2. So many talented artists at this show -- definitely check it out if you're in the area, or take a peek online. All work will be available for sale via their website, as well!

I will be vending at the Bucktown Arts Festival in Chicago this weekend, August 27th & 28th, from 11am-7pm. My booth number is 32 & admission is free, please come and say hello! The fair is being held in Bucktown, which makes sense, at Senior Citizens Memorial Park. I'll have lots of original work with me at this show, as well as prints, notecards, handpainted dishes, stickers, and assorted other goodies.

Also on deck, the ever-awesome Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago, September 10th & 11th from 11am -7pm, all along Division street in Wicker Park....always a seriously good time...bring yo wallet, there's usually an overwhelming amount of good things to buy here ...

And I'll also be at a brand-spankin' new festival, put on by the creators of Pitchfork, called Brilliant Corners of Popular Amusements, September 16 from 3-10pm and September 17th & 18th from 12-10pm in Eckhart Park. It's a live mash-up of a slew of art forms under one big tent -- sort of a modern vaudeville affair. I don't have a little picture for this one yet, but do check out their website, it looks like it's gonna be a very cool event. I mean, Bill Callahan? Dan Deacon? Lots of other amazingness? Hm...I might have to get a helper to watch my booth so I can go listen to Bill Callahan....oh my!

I'd love to see you at one / some / all of these shows! I've been in hibernation all month, chained to my paintbrush, so I will be very excited (and probably a little socially awkward, bear with me) to be out amongst the living and meeting you.

I painted a mural in a lovely little shop called Wildcard in Pittsburgh, PA, all the way back in April. I thought perhaps it was high time I post some photos!

The lighting was in a tricky spot so it was a bit hard to get a shot of the whole thing with accurate coloring, but I did my best to get some photos! 16'x5'.

I love painting murals -- really challenging, but there's a whole different level of fulfillment & learning from doing these huge projects.

I haven't been showing up too much around here lately... crazy times running around the country & lots of projects going on! Had a great time at the Urban Craft Uprising show in Seattle this month despite a rough start whereupon a whole shelf of my handpainted dishes went crashing to the ground, lost forever. A petit tragedy. I swept up and moved on, what can you do? The rest of the show was awesome, I met a ridiculous amount of amazing people, really good vibes there. Hey, Seattle, you are beautiful & amazing, wanna make out?

Will share more of my recent projects very soon! In the meantime, wishing everyone well, out there in the universe, & hoping life is treating you very kindly.

Atomic Sketch Live Drawing tomorrow night!

I'm participating in this live drawing event tomorrow night, Thursday June 30th, at the Green Eye Lounge in Chicago from 6-11 pm.

Here's a bit more information from the Atomic Sketch folks:

Atomic Sketch Event is a monthly live art event entering its third year of awesome nights of art-making and drink-drinking. Atomic Sketch happens monthly at the Green Eye Lounge in Chicago's Bucktown from 6-11 pm.
Each month a panel of established and emerging artists from Chicago - and even visiting artists from around the country - is selected to create original works of art live at the event. These pieces then hang on the walls and sell for extremely affordable prices. Artists whose work priced in the hundreds of dollars often sell work for $10 or $20! This format allows artists a great community to network in and art enthusiasts a great way to score real art for affordable prices.
This month's panel consists of 7 great artists including:

For those who have never been, our panel of artists will create original works of art through the night and put them on the wall for extremely affordable prices.

Atomic Sketch Event takes no commission on work sold that is created at the event.

The Fabulous Animal Rescue Project

I am honored to join the Fabulous Animal Rescue Project, an amazing global not-for-profit effort by artists & animal lovers to raise funds for animal rescue groups, sanctuaries, and shelters. The organization sells handmade greeting cards, magnets, buttons, and pocket mirrors with images donated by artists, and donates the profits from their sales to help our animal pals.

I have donated a drawing I made of this little sloth hanging out in the sun.

Look! If you are in Atlanta, the lovely Youngblood Boutique + Gallery is now carrying my wares -- prints, notes, and soon some wee original paintings on wood... They are found at 636 N Highland Avenue & they host some really nice art showings, too.

Maybe you live in northern Ireland? You do? Can I come and visit you? Please email me, if so. Irish friends, you could visit Yard Gallery in Holywood on the shore of Belfast Lough. I have some notes & prints there now. They are connected to a coffee shop called Coffee Yard which sounds quite pleasant. It involves coffee, which is very good.

Oh! If you live in Portland, you can now find my notecards at Zim Zim in Stumptown, which is located at 2805 SE Ankeny Street & looks like a very fun time.

Hey, I've got some new goodies in my shop today! This little 3"x3" vinyl sticker & 8"x10" print of my "Together" illustration are now available. The sticker is fully backed in adhesive, so you can stick it anywhere....not that I'm advocating any sort of vandalism... but it's not really vandalism when you're spreading good energy around with a nice message, is it? Of course, you could also stick it somewhere for your eyes alone. The print is archival and has a nice white border for easy framing. It's available with or without the text.

Also new in ye olde etsy shoppe today, I've added a couple of original paintings ("Standing Still", "Ground Sounds" and "Companion")& a new handpainted dish, #39. I'll be adding new items to the shop quite frequently in the coming month, so please swing by during your interneting & check it out!

My Goodness My Gocco exhibition in Sydney

I am very happy to have been invited to participate in a group gocco exhibition at Sweets Workshop in Sydney, Australia. The show opens this weekend, May 14, and runs through June 1st.

Official Opening: 2pm Saturday, 14th May.
Where: Sweets Workshop, Shop 4, 58-60 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill 2130

Gocco is amazing, a very cool (and dangerously addictive) self-contained mini screenprinting machine. It's from Japan. I have a handful of different prints in the show, and there are a bunch of lovely artists exhibiting from around the world. I wish I could go, especially because if I could go, that would mean I was in Australia, and that is something I have always wanted to be. In Australia. And also in New Zealand. And also in Japan.

Thinking of Australia makes me think of koala bears, because they are seriously cute. This then makes me google koala bears and spend several minutes dicking around on the internet & browsing baby animals, one of my favorite forms of procrastination. This seems like a good excuse to post a photo of a baby koala bear here for our mutual enjoyment. Here you go:

...and boy, does it cost a lot of money to drive here. What the hell, Ohio & Pennsylvania? Why don't you want me to visit you? I would like to visit you. Turnpikes are very expensive. I suppose because they have a fancy name like "turnpike", they get to charge you whatever they want to drive on them. Oh well, i am here now, just processing my internet sticker shock. I'll be fine.

I'm doing a show tomorrow in Pittsburgh, please come and say hi to me if you live here and are feeling friendly. My booth number is 118. Oooh, also there is an Andy Warhol museum near the show that I visited a few years back... very nice, I think you should go look at that, too, if you come tomorrow. It is awesome.

When I'm done with the show, I'm going to go paint a little mural in a shop here. More on that later. I really like to paint murals, so if you want one done, please email me, I will be happy.

.... and I'm still trying to catch up on my e-life. I went backpacking in Indonesia for a month, mostly around Bali & some islands off the coast of Lombok. It was amazing, and immersing in another country- particularly a third world country- has enormous impact on perspective. Anyway, I'll keep short on the philosophical discussions for now. Here are a few of my photos; I think I took over 600 pictures, so narrowing it down was a bit tricky... if you click on the photo & do a zoom, you should be able to see the images a bit better.

I made 26 different miniblocks for my most recent showing, "We're All In This Together", at Paper Boy Chicago (feb 4-mar 3). They are little 2"x2"x2" sealed pieces mounted on solid stained wood blocks. Each block has a hole on the back, so you can hang them on the wall, or you can put them on your shelves or desks, stack em up, build houses with them, whatever you like. They're fun in little groups, too.

While a lot of people (myself possibly included) view this day as a "hallmark-created" holiday, I still think it's never a bad thing to have a day where we give extra big love to people in our lives, be it friends or partners or our awesome barista or whoever we think is really lovely.

I recently painted some little one-off dishes, which was quite a lot of fun. They're even dishwasher & microwave safe. Very fancy. I kind of envisioned them being either decorative or for your rings or pills or something of the sort. But you could do whatever you like with them.

These are all sold now. But I will definitely be doing more of these as soon as time allows as I rather enjoyed it :)

I will be here tomorrow for my last show of the season. Please swing by the Indie Arts Market at Schubas (3159 N Southport in Chicago) for your last-minute shopping, or just to relax & hang out with some nice folks and have a brew & listen to some music.

holy mother, it's busy time!

○○○The holiday edition of the Renegade Chicago show is this weekend, Sat & Sun from 11-7 pm, at the Pulaski Park Fieldhouse, 1419 W Blackhawk!! There will be booze & coffee & trolleys & photobooths to play in & treats & tons of talented independent artists selling their goods to fulfill all of your holiday shopping needs. It's feel-good shopping, people. I love participating in the Renegade shows; I'm really looking forward to it. Stop by tomorrow & say hello, I'll be at booth 62! ♥ ♥

I also have my paintings in a handful of shows this month, a couple of which open tonight!

○○○Snowflakes & Candy Canes is a holiday group exhibition featuring handmade gifts & affordable art by a whole bunch of awesome folks, opening tonight at 323 East in Royal Oak, MI, just outside of Detroit. The show opens this evening and runs until January 1st. I have an original gouache painting on wood hanging in the show.○○○

○○○I also have a bunch of paintings, some prints, and some holiday notecards at Swell Gallery in West Dundee, IL, just outside of Chicago for their holiday arts festival. This show runs tonight (reception from 5-9!) through December 18th. They've got some killer vintage wares at the shop, too, so be sure to swing by and check everything out if you're in the area.○○○

DIY Trunk Show is tomorrow!

I'll be participating in the DIY Trunk Show tomorrow (sat nov 20th) at Pulaski Park Auditorium in Chicago, 1419 W Blackhawk. Admission is free & there will be awesome things like back rubs for sale and things to eat and coffee and such. And I will be there hawking my wares at Booth #20 in the main auditorium, so please stop by and say hello! I'll have lots of holiday cards, including a thanksgiving design, prints, original paintings, tote bags, buttons, and love for you.

I will be having a solo showing of new work at Inkling in Chicago (2917 N Broadway) from November 12th until January 2nd. I've got 30+ new pieces on wood & paper, plus prints, notecards (holiday and otherwise), and assorted other wares.

There's a reception open to the public on Friday November 12, from 6-10 pm. Cheap beer will be available, so please come and drink one with me! Bring your pals, we'll have fun and make new friends and be nice to each other and it'll feel nice and be awesome, I promise.

ooh, also, there's a new little jimmy jam down on the right hand side of this blog here where you can plug in your email address and join my mailing list. It's very fancy. I will only send you an email once every few months or so, I won't be a bug.

A Slew of New Holiday Cards

Several new holiday card designs are available now in my etsy shop. There's even a Thanksgiving card in case you can't make it to see all the people you're thankful for. You can send them a card and then they'll know.

All cards are A2 sized (4.25"x5.5") blank inside & come with a matching envelope. They're listed in singles in my shop, but if you're looking for a boxed set, feel free to email me -- we can set you up!
